How literacy will affect your social life?
Literacy, as people usually think, is just reading, and reading itself is defined as an ability to know alphabets, groups of alphabets, or groups of words even groups of sentences without understanding the main idea of what you have read. Actually, if we talk about it, what we do is only a part of literacy, not fully literacy.
Cited from Literacy Doesn’t Just Mean Reading by Patti Marohn, Literacy is not just reading. The chief components of literacy are reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening. Based on UNESCO Institute for Statistics, Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, develop their knowledge and potential, and participate fully in their community and wider society.
So how to achieve literacy? First, find articles about your hobbies. For example, If you like sports, what sports do you like? find articles about them. The more you know the more you will understand how they go, starting from the rules, the teams, the uniforms and etc. There, you will find your circle to talk and to share with. Second, make reading your daily routine. As it is said above, the more you read the more you will know and understand. Literacy is not only the text of sentences but also numeracy. Third, try to read other articles though maybe at first you are not interested in. Here, you will find new things to broaden your social activity. When you mingle with others whose got different interests, you will still be able to listen and communicate.
The more you read the more you will coup the world. Why? because through reading, there are many things you will know and understand. You don’t have to visit Thailand, but you know what Thailand is like. You don’t have to study at Colombia University, but when you hear people talking about that, you have got the imagination of how the students study there.
So, start from now on, build your literacy and the world will be in your hand.
